Originally released by Klanggalerie in December 2020 IT DOESN'T MATTER WHERE IT'S SOLSTICE WHEN YOU'RE IN THE ROOM is all about Kodax Strophes/Martyn Bates making something wide-screen and filmic, kind of unhinged, and yet painterly – aleatoric, yet not absolutely or definitively so. It's an often sparse canvas, with lots of raw, ambient found sounds colouring things … it's something quite different from “song”: music for emptying dreams, music to free-associate by ... kinda psychedelic, pretty damn spikey: this music is unashamedly LOW-FI, INDUSTRIAL-PSYCHEDELIC SOUNDSCAPING. Kodax Strophes is in a way where Martyn Bates originally began - for among the first things that he made for public consumption was the DISSONANCE music of 1979/80 (working under the name of Migraine Inducers). As with DISSONANCE quite key to Kodax Strophes is its filmic orientation & orientation: all the pieces were written and developed to ‘mess-aesthetic film’ images of Bates' own devising - i.e. they were conceived as being part musical, part filmic. Now, for the first time can be seen here all the corresponding, simultaneously composed film versions that helped inspire and form the music of IT DOESN'T MATTER WHERE IT'S SOLSTICE WHEN YOU'RE IN THE ROOM . REVIEW : It Doesnt Matter Where Its Solstice When You're In The Room is a wonderfully heady and often a fairly dissonating blend of ambience, psychedelic electronica, field recordings, and general experimental texturing. (...) All in all, a wonderfully woozy and warped album, which purveys such an appealing air of hazed surrealism. This release appeared at the tail end of 2020, and I can certainly say if Id heard it then, it would have made my best of the year list.
