Arthur Mee : inside the book, i will ride away – and i will play/and your mind and i, we will write and shape & we will live the day - sometimes in sleeping, & sometimes awake – they read, they wait/reckoning, beckoning, calling thru the gate of opening day . opening, opening, opening . sons & daughters, half in sleep, half awake, sing in circle – thread around, thread again/weave for me, do not wait/breath of light change the day/mirror face/weave of words/strings that play in the maze/picture-strange/lines a-blaze/animate/taking shape/blend & brake/drawing awake the half asleep & the half-awake/opening, opening, opening .
2.
Shell & Eagle Book : in that seventh spring i was listening/in that seventh year, i was centering/seashell to my ear – sea flows from the shell, flows under the door, laps around myself … waves dash me to ground, waves ride me away … mind & body song – eyes & vision changed/it’s a gift to be listening/it’s a gift to hear the song/it’s a gift to be travelling, be arriving, to belong /with that seventh spring they all moved away/with that seventh year, I became estranged/faces turn to masks, masks that turn away and i’m left listening as I ride upon the waves/ it’s a gift to be joyous, it’s a gift to realise, is a gift to be awakened, to be astonished - to be surprised .
3.
Treasure Of Feathers : and to you, i send a treasure of feathers, the gift of flight/rise high, all-alive in daylight/and in the night, skies you’ll ride… you’ll rise alive in full-flight/and, for you i give a measure of distance/truly alive you’ll thrive the realm of all these rooms /you’ll rise in yr own light/unshadowed, blooming, a blessing … a searing searching sight/a seeing … insight, all-alive … your right, your being & birthright/yr own light . and, with you a living imagination so right, unshadowed - so alive as you walk from that room .
4.
Smashed Milk (room awoke from sleeping) : curtains sway/run away-everstay/the room - paint away/play the day/universe - this room/rainyday shadow-draped, sunshine splayed – room/worlds amazed/unafraid/wonder spins the room . curious, curiouser/story-fed/the room/pages spill/pictures fill every eye – the room/dogs that fly – time that hides – cats bestride the room/birds that talk – winds that cry – animals – the room/furniture/all-alive/creaks n sighs – the room/carpets fly – windows invite – bathe in light – the room/all these things, falling in falling to – the room/where am i – here am i – i am in this room .
5.
Night-Window/Christ Child : i ride the rain, then rain to sun/then sun to light – to echo again/i run the winds, the turning days over … the lamp of days to set the blaze rolling/imagination feels like reason, feels like lights : feels like meaning … imagination feels like purpose, feels like focus, feels like gold/i ride the night, night to day’s end/the daylight it will rise, the season to frame /and i run the sun in brightness ablaze/to step the world over, to pace thru the days/imagination – this night window, the air so cooling the stars so strange/imagination – the day open, the breath of morning when I awake .
6.
Friends Came To Stay : friends came to stay/from this street, from the next street … companions, confidantes/to listen then/to tell then – friends came to say, and i can’t say they’ll stay/friends came to stay, all on a sun-filled day/and streaming through the window comes light alive/and, wondering on the nature of my sight, i breathe again/and i changed - and they changed - the room change - our eyes changed - the light changed - the day changed - the music changed : the picture changes/and streaming through the window comes light-alive/and, dazzled in the nature of my sight – i breathe again .

Paper Swans/Sunny Wedding Of The Painted Dolls/The Cyclopaedia/Pears

Kindred (learn the name she sang) : learn the name, know my name she sang/see it as a wisdom of the calling days/leaning days/changeless change/see it as a vision that your heart will make/my true love of the morning/see it as a vision that your heart will make, take and shape dance and chase/see it as a beginning of dancing days, my true love of the morning . lull me asleep, sing the mother tongue/break no token, cease no song/marking the spirit long ah long, my true love of the morning . the lilt and the light in the breast of the bird/the flying bird, bird flying morning/the sun treading with me as the lifelight unfurls/my true love of the morning . long the tune/the riddling song, the tell-tale flowering given to one, to one another/long ah long my true love of the morning .

Scattered Song : you, who are running far/you, who are scattered far/you, who are strong as air – pass it to me/you, who disperse in grace/you, who seem scattered/you, who are travelled far – sing it to me/i will learn now, i will know now, i shall catch you now/you who empty dreams then fuel many things/you who will fashion now – pass it to me . you who run so hard/you, who or whatever you are- you, scattered so far – sing it to me/whatever, wherever lies heart’s music, then spirit rise steadfast, imploring to rights . you who are wanderers, you who scatter far/you who travel over – sing it to me/you who wisdom are, you who are knowledge now/you who run so hard – sing it to me .

about

Of the Post-War Baby recordings, Martyn Bates offers the following helpful notes : “YOU MIGHT SAY that all of this is my very own reading of Swift As The Wind or perhaps the prelapsarian worlds which Dylan Thomas inhabited – an attempt to convey what may or may not have once been seen by myself with the complete eye of innocence. Born late 1957, it’s a picture of a child’s world, maybe – that of the Post-War Baby, still so - even in the early 1960’s, with a mix of lingering austerity painlessly clashing with the bright optimism in the (still!) post-war air … it is the giant world of imagination, armed with a handful of books – glimpsed within the nascent spiritual world of the child )” .
